从230亿亏损到140亿利润:班轮公司的“钱”途一片光明

In just a few months, with the release of the shipping company's third-quarter results, the Danish shipping consulting agency sea-intelligence revised the forecast of EBIT for the liner industry for the fourth time this year.

The Danish consulting company initially predicted at the start of the new coronavirus pandemic in April that when many countries enter a lockdown, the worst-case scenario is that the liner company will lose a total of 23 billion US dollars. It is now predicted that the liner industry will achieve a profit of $14 billion this year.

To be fair, during the pandemic, most business sectors—not just the shipping industry—have failed to make correct profit forecasts. In the second quarter of this year, due to the impact of Covid-19, the container industry will be hit hardest among all shipping sectors. Facts have proved that in 2020, container shipping will be the best performer in this field to a certain extent.

According to the forecast of the shipping consulting agency Sea-Intelligence, the world's top container shipping companies are expected to achieve billions of dollars in operating profits in 2020, which will be the highest level in eight years.

Sea-Intelligence predicts that the consolidated operating profit EBIT of the container shipping industry this year is expected to exceed US$14 billion. The analysis company said that compared with 2019, this is a significant improvement, in 2019 the operating profit of the industry reached 5.9 billion US dollars.

In recent months, the dual effects of high freight and low fuel prices have jointly increased the profits of the world's major container shipping companies.

"There is no doubt that the shipping performance in 2020 will not only far exceed last year, but also exceed the past 8 years." Sea-Intelligence wrote.

On the other hand, the consulting agency said that the uncertainty for the shipping industry in 2021 seems to be greater, and the profit of the same scale is far from certain, "because the market is expected to stabilize."

"But considering that the potential advantage in 2020 is in capacity management, and the orders in 2021 are indeed very limited, we should be able to expect a very high level of profitability in 2021. If the shipping company can really deliver on the extremely strong spot If you stay determined before the price," Sea-Intelligence wrote.
